What
A skill is a packaged set of instructions Claude Code can follow, stored in a SKILL.md file. Before, a proposal to improve one through propose_skills had to carry a whole new skillMd that replaced the file. Now:
- An improvement can carry an
editsarray instead: 1 to 100old_string/new_stringreplacements, applied in order. - A new skill still needs
skillMdand takes no edits. - Edits are checked against the current
SKILL.md. Failures give specific errors, such as anold_stringthat is missing or appears more than once, oredits_on_old_copywhen the copy differs from the last proposal. - The tool also adds
deriveObservableInput, and its prompt is built from a helper that depends on a gate.
Nothing has been read about the related gate tengu_propose_skills_read_check.
Why
Skill proposals can patch an existing skill rather than rewriting it, which lowers the chance of accidentally dropping existing content.
