What

Claude can read and write project documents with the project_read and project_write tools. Writes already needed an if_version value. The rules about when Claude may replace an existing document are now stricter:

  • project_write refuses to overwrite an existing doc unless the conversation holds a project_read that showed the whole text or saved it to a file. The refusal says "Write refused; nothing in the project was changed. A doc is already at this path".
  • The same check now also covers project_write from a local_path, a file on your computer, but only when both the tengu_lovely_rain and tengu_lucky_nebula flags are on. Before, it needed only tengu_lovely_rain and did not apply to writes from a local_path.
  • Reads now say whether the whole text was returned, in a whole field.
  • A version is now returned by every project_write, including one from a local_path, and by a project_read that returned or saved the whole text. A read that delivers only part of a doc gets no version.
  • Write results can also carry a notice.
  • The descriptions of if_version and version given to Claude now say this. Before, they said every project_read of a text doc returns its version.

The flag server returned off for both flags for this site's account and for an anonymous check, but those readings were not taken under this release.

Why

Claude can no longer replace a document after seeing only part of it, which helps stop it overwriting changes made elsewhere, including when it writes from a local file.
