What

Claude Code cleans some text by removing hidden or unusual Unicode characters, which are characters that do not show on screen but can change how text is read. That cleanup step can now keep a log of every edit it makes, including:

  • characters it removes
  • characters it replaces with U+FFFD, the standard replacement character
  • line endings (CR/LF) that it normalises

Claude Code can also use this log to find which part of the original text a stretch of cleaned text came from.

Why

This lets Claude Code point from cleaned text back to the exact place it sits in the original, instead of losing track once characters have been removed.
