What

WebFetch is the tool Claude uses to read a web page. It can now mark its result as citable, so the page text is handed to Claude as a search result with citations turned on, split into pieces of about 500 characters. Claude can then point to the part of the page it used. All of these must hold:

  • CLAUDE_CODE_WEBSEARCH_CITATIONS is set
  • the fetch took the path where a secondary model handles the page
  • the fetch was made by a subagent, a helper agent Claude starts for part of a task
  • a remotely controlled switch is on

Pages over a size limit still come back as plain text, and the citable mark is dropped where results are created again.

Why

Setting the environment variable is not enough on its own. The remote switch is off unless Anthropic's server turns it on, and it read off for this site's account and for an anonymous check.

Feature flag
tengu_proud_flurry_enabled Off in both readings

The flag server returned off for the account this site reads and for the anonymous baseline. A reading of off cannot rule out a rollout these two readings sit outside of.

This account: off · anonymous baseline: off · compiled default in v2.1.318: off

These values were read against a different version of Claude Code, so treat them as the nearest reading available instead of one taken on this release.

Read once, for one account on one subscription tier, against v2.1.318. It isn't a statement about your account. What a flag value here can and cannot tell you
