What

Claude Code can run shell commands, which are commands sent to your terminal's command line, and some of them can be sent to the background to keep running while you work. When memory is critically low, Claude Code can stop running shell commands to free memory. Before, it would stop any running shell task it had not yet reported on. It now stops a task only if it is a shell command whose status is backgrounded.

This cleanup can be switched off with the environment variable CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_BG_SHELL_PRESSURE_REAP.

Why

A shell command running in the foreground is no longer stopped because memory is low.
