Unclear What the tether feature does is not stated.
What
Zero data retention is an account arrangement under which Anthropic does not keep your data. Claude Code now checks for such accounts before turning on a live feature called tether. If the account is zero data retention and a server-controlled switch allows the exclusion, tether is off. Otherwise Claude Code decides as before. The result is remembered for the rest of the session.
Why
This keeps a feature away from accounts set up for zero data retention, which is a privacy-related change in behaviour for those accounts.
