Claude Code v2.1.309 ·

Desktop host apps can supply Google Drive file uploads instead of the model

In host-embedded sessions, the app running Claude Code can fill in a file for a Google Drive upload, so the model does not have to write out the file's contents

Unclear It is not stated which host apps advertise support for this, so it is unclear where a reader will actually get it.

What

Some apps run Claude Code inside themselves, such as a desktop app. In those sessions, a file being uploaded to Google Drive through the Google Drive connector can now be filled in by that app. The model no longer has to write the whole file out itself. A connector is a link between Claude Code and an outside service such as Google Drive.

This only happens when the app says it supports it and all of these are true:

  • The connector runs as an SDK server, meaning a tool server provided by the host app itself.
  • The session is not a remote one, so CLAUDE_CODE_REMOTE is not set.
  • CLAUDE_CODE_ENVIRONMENT_KIND is not set.
  • The server's advertised serverId is the same as its name.
  • A further internal check passes.

In practice this covers desktop and other host-embedded sessions only. It does not apply in the plain command line or in remote sessions.

Why

Without this, the model has to type out a file's full contents as encoded text before it can upload it, which is slow and uses up a lot of space. Letting the host app supply the file skips that step. It only helps when you use Claude Code through an app that supports it.
