A connector is a link between Claude Code and an outside service such as Google Drive.\n\nThis only happens when the app says it supports it and all of these are true:\n\n- The connector runs as an SDK server, meaning a tool server provided by the host app itself.\n\n- The session is not a remote one, so `CLAUDE_CODE_REMOTE` is not set.\n\n- `CLAUDE_CODE_ENVIRONMENT_KIND` is not set.\n\n- The server's advertised `serverId` is the same as its name.\n\n- A further internal check passes.\n\nIn practice this covers desktop and other host-embedded sessions only. It does not apply in the plain command line or in remote sessions.\n\n**Why**\n\nWithout this, the model has to type out a file's full contents as encoded text before it can upload it, which is slow and uses up a lot of space. Letting the host app supply the file skips that step. It only helps when you use Claude Code through an app that supports it.\n\n- Area: Connectors\n- Tier: You'll notice\n- Useful: 3\/5\n- Signal: 3\/5\n- Scope: individual\n- Heads-up: no"}
