Unclear It is not clear what marks a session as diskless, so whether any reader's sessions run this way is unknown.
What
Claude Code reads settings from several files, such as project settings (shared in a project folder) and local settings (your own for that project). A new diskless option changes this:
- The settings loader skips a source when
disklessis set. - Project and local settings lookup returns early when
disklessis set. Before, it only returned early when there was no working folder and no project config folder. - Separately, one code path now returns early when a check (
Z()) is true.
Why
This points to a way of running Claude Code without reading settings from disk, for example when it is embedded in another program or run remotely. In that mode, settings files in the project are not read.
