What

In auto mode, Claude acts without asking you each time, and a classifier checks whether each action is safe. A classifier is a model that sorts actions into safe or not. Claude Code now picks the classifier's model in this order:

  • A model set in Anthropic's server configuration.
  • The model you name in the CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_MODEL environment variable.
  • A built-in default.

Claude Code ignores CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_MODEL and shows a warning in these cases:

  • A server model is set.
  • Your organization's model policy does not allow that model.
  • The API's safeguards refuse the classifier's stricter check on that model.
Why

If you pin the classifier's model with CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_MODEL, it may not be the one actually used. Watch for the warning that starts "Auto mode classifier: ignoring CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_MODEL=".

Since it was published

The entry above is what we published on the day. These lines were added later, as Anthropic's own pages caught up, and they sit beside the original rather than replacing it.
