What
When a session is backgrounded or exits, Claude Code can hand its unfinished work over to another session. This handoff is on by default, and setting the CLAUDE_DISABLE_ADOPT environment variable turns it off.
The variable is now checked in more places. Handoff when a session exits in the background is one of them. Checks on agents, which are helpers Claude runs to do part of a task, are another, along with checks on whether a frame is still live and one further check.
Why
If you set CLAUDE_DISABLE_ADOPT to stop work being handed from one session to another, it now reaches further into Claude Code. It remains on by default when the variable is not set.
