Unclear What a held plugin is, and how its handling differs between the two modes, is not stated.

What

Plugins are add-ons that extend Claude Code. When Claude Code installs a plugin, it used to always read the list of plugins already on disk again. It can now be handed that list and use it instead.

The install then runs in one of two modes:

  • keeps-held-plugins, used when the list is handed in
  • rereads-disk, used when Claude Code reads the list itself
Why

This skips an extra read from disk during installs. It also changes how plugins that are being held are treated during an install.
