An MCP server is an outside program that gives Claude extra tools, sometimes called a connector. Claude Code's MCP tool calls can now run as a series of rounds for downloading files the connector offers:
- If the server does not say it supports downloads, the call fails.
- Background tasks are turned off for that call.
- Later rounds send back the earlier state and the answers needed to continue.
The request also tells the server whether it advertised downloads and whether downloads are on.
This sets up a way for connectors to hand files to Claude Code during a tool call.
