Unclear How many refusals in a row end the turn is not stated.
The permissions.denyInsteadOfPrompting setting makes Claude Code refuse an action it would otherwise ask you about. A tool call is one action, such as running a command or editing a file. Claude Code now counts how many tool calls in a row are refused this way. After enough of them, it ends the turn, which is Claude's current go at your request, and logs "calls in a row refused under permissions.denyInsteadOfPrompting, ending the turn". The count starts over when a tool call that counts is allowed to run.
The setting now also applies in more places:
- Auto mode checks in sessions with no one to ask
- Refusals in bypass permissions mode
A refusal in auto mode can also end the turn.
In setups where no one can answer a prompt, Claude no longer keeps trying actions that will only be refused.
