A tool call is one action, such as running a command or editing a file. Claude Code now counts how many tool calls in a row are refused this way. After enough of them, it ends the turn, which is Claude's current go at your request, and logs \"calls in a row refused under permissions.denyInsteadOfPrompting, ending the turn\". The count starts over when a tool call that counts is allowed to run.\n\nThe setting now also applies in more places:\n\n- Auto mode checks in sessions with no one to ask\n\n- Refusals in bypass permissions mode\n\nA refusal in auto mode can also end the turn.\n\n**Why**\n\nIn setups where no one can answer a prompt, Claude no longer keeps trying actions that will only be refused.\n\n- Area: Permissions\n- Names: `permissions.denyInsteadOfPrompting`\n- Tier: You'll notice\n- Useful: 2\/5\n- Signal: 1\/5\n- Scope: both\n- Heads-up: no"}
