What
Compaction is when Claude Code shortens a long conversation by replacing older messages with a summary. If a summary was already being made when you stop the turn, Claude Code can now keep it. The next compaction can then use it.
The kept summary is thrown away if the messages it covers have changed since, or if the point where it starts can no longer be found.
Why
Stopping a turn no longer wastes a summary that was already on its way.
