Unclear It is not clear whether REPL mode is switched on by default or how a reader turns it on.
What
In REPL mode, Claude does its work by writing and running code in a live coding session. Pressing Esc or otherwise cancelling used to end Claude's turn immediately, and a wait step for this case existed but did nothing. Now, when you stop while that code is still running:
- Claude Code marks the stop as pending and interrupts the running code.
- It waits on a timer, then ends the turn and sends back the result.
- A second stop request while one is already pending is not treated as a new stop.
Outside REPL mode nothing changes.
Why
Stopping in REPL mode now gives running code a moment to be interrupted cleanly, so the turn may take a short time to end after you press stop.
