What
Compaction is when Claude Code shrinks a long conversation by having the model write a summary of it, so the work can continue. Claude Code sends a usage report to Anthropic each time this happens.
That report used to name which variant of the summary instructions was in use. It now sends a hash in its place. A hash is a short fingerprint calculated from the exact wording of the instructions that were sent.
Why
The report now identifies the exact summary instruction text, not just a variant label. Nothing changes in how compaction works for you.
