Unclear What happens when the check decides to skip is not clear.
Compaction is when Claude Code shortens earlier parts of a long conversation to free up room. A new check decides whether to skip it. It looks at the estimated size of the conversation in tokens (small pieces of text), the model, how close the conversation is to being blocked, and the context window (how much the model can see at once). Its last condition is the remote switch tengu_concurrent_lake, which falls back to off when the server sends nothing. If the check fails with an error, Claude Code records that and does not skip.
This could change when long conversations get compacted.
