Unclear These refusals only apply when a further condition holds, and what that condition is, and whether it is met by default, is not stated.

What

Auto mode lets Claude carry out actions without asking you each time, with Claude Code checking each action first to decide whether it is safe. The REPL tool is a tool Claude uses to write and run a short piece of code.

Claude Code can now turn down a REPL script in auto mode in these cases:

  • A hook, which is a script you configure to run at certain points, changed the code or changed an earlier action in the same reply.
  • The code contains a \uXXXX escape, a way of writing a character as a code number. The message reads: Auto mode cannot check code that contains a \uXXXX escape.
  • The code starts sub-agents or sends messages to other agents. The message reads: Claude's code cannot start sub-agents in auto mode in this session.
Why

In each of these cases the code that would run is harder for auto mode to check reliably, so Claude Code refuses it rather than approving something it cannot judge.
