What

Skills are packaged sets of instructions that Claude Code can load and use. Claude Code can sync them, meaning it fetches them from elsewhere and keeps them up to date. It now keeps a count of failed attempts for each version of each skill. After each failure it waits longer before the next try, and the wait doubles every time. This is called exponential backoff.

Reloading skills clears these failure counts. Claude Code can now also tell apart more reasons why a skill could not be put in place, such as a claim on the skill running out of time.

The backoff is controlled by a setting that Anthropic can change remotely. When the server sends nothing, it falls back to on.

Why

A skill that keeps failing to sync is no longer retried over and over. That cuts down on repeated work and noise while the problem lasts.
