Unclear It is not clear what makes a model need auto or plan mode, which is the second case that leads to auto mode.

What

Plan mode is a setting where Claude works out a plan and shows it to you before changing anything. When it finishes, an "Exit plan mode?" dialog asks whether to go ahead. Claude Code has several permission modes, which control how often Claude stops to ask before acting. Auto mode is one of them, and default mode is the standard one.

The plain "yes" option on that dialog used to always switch you to default mode. It now returns you to auto mode in either of these cases:

  • You switched into plan mode from auto mode.
  • The model in use needs auto or plan mode.

In every other case, "yes" still goes to default mode.

Why

This changes which permission mode you are in after you approve a plan. If you start in auto mode and step into plan mode for one task, approving the plan now puts you back where you started instead of quietly dropping you into default mode, where Claude asks before more of its actions.
