What
Claude Code has a new kind of API error for when a request is turned away before any work was done on it.
RouteTurnedAwayError: the new error carries a status and a retryAfter value, which says how long to wait before trying again.
User-facing text: this error now shows as "The API is temporarily unavailable" instead of a generic error.
Separately, Claude Code now records calls made by task-list subagents, up to a size limit. A subagent is a helper instance of Claude that works on part of a task.
Why
When this happens you see a plain message saying the API is briefly unavailable. Because the request was rejected before any work started, trying again later is safe.
