What

Grep and Glob are the tools Claude uses to search file contents and find files by name. Both run a fast search program called ripgrep. On macOS, when the runtime Claude Code is built on supports it, Claude Code now reopens the folder you approved for the search. It opens it in a way that will not follow symbolic links, which are shortcut files that point somewhere else. It then checks that the opened folder is the same one that was approved and starts ripgrep inside that already-open folder. Before, ripgrep was started at the folder's path, with only a check just before it started.

The search is refused instead of run in these cases:

  • The runtime does not support starting a program inside an open folder. The error points you to /bug.
  • Opening the folder fails with an invalid-argument error. The error points you to /bug.
  • The folder was moved or replaced while the search was starting. Nothing is searched and you are told to try again.
Why

This closes a gap where a folder could be swapped for a symbolic link to somewhere else in the moment between the check and the search. On some drives or volumes you may now see these refusal errors where searches used to run.
