When a project file is too large to include in full, Claude Code can hand back a local_file pointer in its place. Claude Code now has a group of options for this that only Anthropic's server can set:
- Read-only hint: a longer note telling Claude that the
local_fileis read-only. It appears only when the server turns on a copy hint, and in some cases a long-lines option too. - Size budget: a limit on how much file content is included, set by a mode (
alwaysorafter_compaction, where compaction means shortening the conversation to save space) and by fraction and share values.
When the server sends nothing, both do nothing.
These let Anthropic adjust how much of a project file is read inline, and what Claude is told about the offloaded copy, without a new release. Until the server sends settings, project file reads work as before.

This account: off · anonymous baseline: off · compiled default in v2.1.314: not a boolean we can read
These values were read against a different version of Claude Code, so treat them as the nearest reading available instead of one taken on this release.
Read once, for one account on one subscription tier, against v2.1.314. It isn't a statement about your account. What a flag value here can and cannot tell you
