What

Claude Code has a step that cleans up a piece of text before using it. It used to replace many characters with ?, including arrows, chevrons and private-use characters (codes with no standard meaning, often used for icon fonts). It now only removes a single space at the start or end of the text.

Why

Those characters now pass through unchanged. That matters if the old replacement was there to stop look-alike characters from being shown.
