What
A plugin is an add-on that extends Claude Code. Claude Code keeps a small extra file, called a sidecar, that holds plugin attribution. When that file cannot be read, or is not valid JSON (the text format it is stored in), Claude Code now marks the result as unread. Before, it returned an empty result, the same as when the file did not exist.
Why
Claude Code can now tell a file it failed to read apart from one that is not there.
