What
Compaction is when Claude Code shortens a conversation by summarising it. Idle compaction, also called sleep compaction, does this while a session sits idle. It has changed in these ways:
- It now follows a single mode, such as off or log, instead of a group of settings.
- In log mode it only records that it would have compacted, without doing it.
- The smallest conversation size it acts on is now worked out each time rather than fixed.
- The host, a program that runs Claude Code, can refuse a compaction.
- Whether it summarises now depends on whether there is a host, not on a separate compact-on-return mode.
CLAUDE_CODE_SLEEP_COMPACT still controls whether idle compaction is set up when Claude Code runs without its interface.
Why
This changes when idle compaction happens and how it is reported.
