After each turn in a session of type "hosted_worker", Claude Code now counts the files in the staged-upload folder and the message-attachment folders. It sorts them by kind (such as staged uploads, message images and message PDFs) and by size range. It also notes whether each file was read, using file access times. That last check only runs on ext4 drives that are not set to skip recording access times.
It then sends telemetry (usage data sent back to Anthropic) as headless_uploads_census events. These contain file counts, approximate total size, and whether the list was cut short. It skips the count if the drive does not suit the check or the folder cannot be read. After any error it reports census_failed and stops for the rest of the session.
A remote switch controls this, and it is on unless it is switched off remotely.
This is a new way of collecting data, but it only runs in hosted or cloud workers. Ordinary command-line sessions on your own machine do not run it.
