What
Compaction is the step that shrinks a long conversation by replacing older messages with a summary. The report Claude Code sends about it now has a new value, kept_reply, used when a reply was kept and sent instead of leaving a request unanswered at the end.
Why
This suggests compaction can now continue from a reply it kept, rather than only from an unanswered request.
