In auto mode, Claude Code relies on a check run on Anthropic's servers to decide whether actions are safe to take without asking. When that check is unavailable, Claude Code now says "Auto mode can't check actions in this session." and gives the reason:
- Experimental features are switched off, for example with
CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_EXPERIMENTAL_BETAS. - Anthropic has switched the check off.
- A network proxy does not pass the check through.
- The check was not provided.
Actions that need the check then ask for your approval, with the message "Auto mode couldn't check this action, so it needs your approval". Where nobody can be asked, they are refused, and a run of refusals stops the session.
If you use a proxy or have experimental features turned off, you now get a clear reason and a way forward instead of auto mode failing silently.
