Some sessions, such as remote ones or ones running with no one at the screen, pick up again by themselves after a restart. Claude Code now counts how many times a session restarts without a new message from you. If that count goes past a limit within a set period, it stops continuing the session automatically and shows an error:
- "This session restarted with no new message, and Claude has stopped continuing it automatically. Send a message to continue."
- "Claude couldn't confirm that it could continue this session on its own, so it didn't. Send a message to continue."
The limit comes from a server setting. It is off unless the server sends a positive whole number, and the limit is capped at 10.
This stops a session that restarts over and over from running on with no one involved. If you rely on sessions resuming by themselves, one may now pause and wait for you to send a message.
