What
Claude Code saves each conversation to a file on disk and sometimes shrinks that file to free space. It used to work out the full plan for shrinking a file before deciding whether the job was worth doing. It can now make a cheaper estimate first and skip files where little space would be freed, before doing the full work. This early check is controlled by a setting.
Two related changes:
The record of a skipped shrink now notes whether the amount of space that could be freed is only an upper estimate.
Removing a single message from a saved conversation can now be done in the file of another session, not only the current one.
Why
This means less reading and writing of files on disk when shrinking a file would not help much.
