Unclear Whether setting CLAUDE_CODE_INCREMENTAL_REQUEST_BODY alone is enough to turn the mode on is not known.

What

The environment variable CLAUDE_CODE_INCREMENTAL_REQUEST_BODY controls a new way of building the requests Claude Code sends to the model, reusing content from earlier requests. An environment variable is a setting you give a program from your shell. When it is unset it counts as 0, which is off.

  • A nonzero value turns the mode on, but only if a second internal check also passes.
  • A value of 2 also reuses content in blocks. That needs CLAUDE_CODE_GZIP_REQUEST_BODY_BLOCKS set to 1 or 2, which turns on the existing compression of requests.
  • The mode does nothing when Claude Code is not using Anthropic's own API directly, or when a request asks for a set output format.
Why

It changes how requests to the model are built behind the scenes. You get the old behaviour unless the variable, or a value from the server, turns it on.
