An environment variable is a setting you give a program from your shell. When it is unset it counts as 0, which is off.\n\n- A nonzero value turns the mode on, but only if a second internal check also passes.\n\n- A value of 2 also reuses content in blocks. That needs `CLAUDE_CODE_GZIP_REQUEST_BODY_BLOCKS` set to 1 or 2, which turns on the existing compression of requests.\n\n- The mode does nothing when Claude Code is not using Anthropic's own API directly, or when a request asks for a set output format.\n\n**Why**\n\nIt changes how requests to the model are built behind the scenes. You get the old behaviour unless the variable, or a value from the server, turns it on.\n\n- Area: Performance\n- Names: `CLAUDE_CODE_INCREMENTAL_REQUEST_BODY`\n- Tier: Use it now\n- Useful: 5\/5\n- Signal: 4\/5\n- Scope: individual\n- Heads-up: no"}
