MCP servers are outside programs that give Claude extra tools. When one fails to connect, Claude Code tells Claude about it. There is now a third case besides "will retry" and "will not retry": a server that is unavailable only for now and is reconnected through tool search. Tool search is how Claude finds and loads tools that are not loaded up front.
For these servers, Claude is told:
- a tool search whose query contains the server's name connects to that server again
- it should report the server as failed, so you can fix or retry it, only after a search naming the server finds none of its tools
Claude is also now given a list of tools that were already loaded before the conversation was summarised.
This changes what Claude tells you when an MCP server is down. For a server that is only briefly unavailable, Claude tries to reconnect it through a search before telling you something is wrong.
