What
Claude Code has new checks that decide whether to compact the conversation after the model refuses a request for being too long. Compacting means summarising older conversation to free up space. The checks apply when the conversation is at or below the size where long-context pricing begins.
There is also new logging for requests that are too long. It records their size and how the actual size compares with Claude Code's estimate.
Why
This points towards Claude Code recovering by itself when a request is refused as too long.
