Unclear It is not clear which sessions have the host machine read files for them.
What
When Claude refers to a file it wants to send to a connector (an outside service linked to Claude), Claude Code checks the reference before it reads the file. Before, there was a single way to read it from the local disk. There are now several:
- The host machine can read the file for the session. It first checks that the file is not outside the allowed folders and is not a credential or one of Claude Code's own files.
- A remote session with no disk of its own reads files through the machine hosting the session.
- A connector reference is dropped if the session no longer holds that connector's entry.
- Outside remote mode, Claude Code looks up the connector's entry directly. It also returns entries marked as refusing file references, because they conflict or were never declared.
- In remote mode, Claude Code can read file details from a store kept on the host.
A container session can also have a file reference refused.
Why
This changes how files are uploaded to connectors and to Claude in Chrome when Claude Code runs in a remote session or a container (an isolated environment that runs separately from your own computer).
