Memory extraction, where Claude Code reviews the conversation from time to time and saves useful facts as memories, can now skip a pass in two cases. This applies when it runs in MCP mode. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a standard way of connecting tools to Claude Code.
- Extra Usage turns: if the turn was billed to Extra Usage (usage beyond your plan's included amount) and the
when_overagesetting isskip, the pass is skipped and those turns wait for the next pass. - First look: a quick model check can run first. If it answers "no" or comes back empty, the pass is skipped.
Claude Code records each kind of skip. Before, a pass ran on every scheduled beat with neither check.
This can stop memory extraction from spending usage on turns billed as Extra Usage, and from running when there is likely nothing to save. Both settings are supplied remotely.
