What

Compaction is when Claude Code summarises older parts of a conversation to free up room. Part of it can be worked out ahead of time, a step called precompute. The usage data Claude Code sends about compaction now includes a count of display-only messages, ones meant for showing on screen, that this step left out.

Why

This suggests the precompute step now leaves display-only messages out of what it works from.
