What
Compaction is when Claude Code summarises earlier parts of a conversation to free up room. The usage data Claude Code sends at startup already reported whether the precompute compaction setting is on. It now also reports where that setting came from. When the setting is not set, the reported value is now on; it used to be off.
Why
This separates people who chose the setting from people who simply have the default.
