What

A heartbeat is a small regular signal that tells the other side a worker is still alive. When a worker sends heartbeats over a socket connection, Claude Code no longer waits for one heartbeat to finish before it sends the next, so two can be in progress at the same time. Before, every heartbeat waited for the one before it.

Why

This concerns how reliably remote sessions report that they are still alive.
