Unclear It is not stated when Claude Code runs in this personal mode, so it is unclear which sessions get these limits.
What
Hooks are commands you configure to run automatically at set points, such as before or after Claude uses a tool. A tool call is one action Claude takes, like reading a file or running a command.
Claude Code has a new "personal" mode that limits what hooks from your own Claude Code files can do:
A hook that tries to change a tool call's input causes that call to be denied.
A hook that answers "defer" is treated as "ask", so you are asked instead.
A hook that tries to change a tool's output in a PostToolUse hook is blocked for some tools.
A hook's terminalSequence output is passed through only in this mode.
When a change is blocked, a message tells you what was kept, for example that Claude read your answer to its question exactly as you gave it, or that the Slack messages Claude read were not altered.
Why
It narrows what your own hooks can do in some sessions, so that what you typed and what Claude read cannot be quietly rewritten. If you rely on hooks that edit tool input or output, expect them to be refused in this mode.
