Remote notifications are messages from outside the session that wait in a queue for Claude to see. Claude Code can now hold back a reminder about them and release it once the oldest one has waited longer than a set number of minutes.
The reminder is only sent when all of these are true:
- It is the main agent, not a subagent.
- Nobody currently has the turn.
- No other message is queued.
The number of minutes comes from a remote setting. When the server sends nothing, it falls back to 0, which means the reminder is off unless it is switched on remotely.
It is a timed fallback, so remote notifications that would otherwise sit unseen eventually get Claude's attention.
