Unclear It is not clear what thinking display updates show, or what value turns them off.

What

Claude Code now checks the environment variable CLAUDE_CODE_THINKING_DISPLAY_UPDATES (a setting you put in your shell before starting Claude Code) for thinking display updates. These stay on unless that variable says otherwise.

Separately, the PushNotification tool still skips its notification when you seem to be at the terminal, and CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_NOTIFICATION_PRESENCE_CHECK still turns that check off.

Why

Thinking display updates are on by default, and this variable gives you a way to turn them off.
