When Claude Code reads a whole PDF and either the model cannot take PDFs or the file is over 3 MB, it used to always turn the pages into images. Those images only fed tengu_pdf_page_extraction telemetry, which is usage data reported back. That render is now skipped when the tengu_deep_starlight gate is true.
PDF renders also accept an abort signal, which lets a render be stopped part way. It is wired in from files attached with an @-mention. Each outcome is reported with:
- whether the request was a
page_rangeorwhole_file - the render result
- file size in bytes and page counts
Reading a large PDF can avoid work whose only purpose was reporting, and a PDF render started from an @-mention can be cancelled instead of running to the end.
