534534Claude Code reads the [`spellcheck`](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/settings-reference#spellcheck) setting from three places, and ignores it in a project's `.claude/settings.json` and `.claude/settings.local.json`. Turn it on from whichever one you use:

536> [tab] User settings

538> Add `spellcheck` to `~/.claude/settings.json`. It applies in every project you open, like the rest of your [user settings](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/settings.md#where-settings-live):
539>
540> ```json theme={null}
541> {
542> "spellcheck": { "enabled": true }
543> }
544> ```

548> Save `spellcheck` in a JSON file, such as `spellcheck.json`:

550> ```json theme={null}
551> {
552> "spellcheck": { "enabled": true }
553> }
554> ```
555>
556> Then pass the file to `--settings`. It applies to that session only:
557>
558> ```bash theme={null}
559> claude --settings spellcheck.json
560> ```

540```json theme={null}

550```json theme={null}
551{

556Then pass the file to `--settings`. It applies to that session only:
557
558```bash theme={null}
559claude --settings spellcheck.json
560```
561
562**Managed settings**
563
564Add `spellcheck` to one of your organization's [managed settings sources](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/permissions.md#managed-settings). It applies to every user who receives those settings, and they can't turn it off:
565
566```json theme={null}
567{
568 "spellcheck": { "enabled": true }
569}
570```
562> [tab] Managed settings
563>

565>

569> }
570> ```

572572To check that spell checking is on, type a misspelled word and a space. Claude Code underlines the word. If it doesn't, see [When Claude Code underlines nothing](#when-claude-code-underlines-nothing). To turn spell checking off again, set `enabled` to `false` in the same place, or remove `spellcheck`.
