6969When Claude finishes a task or pauses for a permission prompt, and you appear to be away from the terminal, it fires a notification event. See [when each notification type fires](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/hooks.md#notification) for the exact timing. Surfacing this as a terminal bell or desktop notification lets you switch to other work while a long task runs.

71By default Claude Code sends a desktop notification only in Ghostty, Kitty, and iTerm2. In other terminals, set [`preferredNotifChannel`](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/settings-reference#preferrednotifchannel) to `"terminal_bell"` to ring the terminal bell instead, or configure a [Notification hook](#play-a-sound-with-a-notification-hook) for a custom sound or command. The following settings entry turns on the terminal bell:
71By default, Claude Code sends a desktop notification in some terminals, and a bell character or nothing in others:
72
73* **Ghostty, Kitty, and iTerm2**: a desktop notification, which iTerm2 shows only after you turn on its alert settings.
74* **Apple Terminal**: no sound; a silent bell character when Claude Code finds "Audible bell" off in the front Terminal window's profile, otherwise nothing. That bell character shows as a window flash, or a Dock bounce while Terminal is in the background, if that profile's "Visual bell" or Dock bounce option is on.
75* **Other terminals**: nothing.
76
77To make Claude Code send the bell character whatever the terminal or profile, set [`preferredNotifChannel`](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/settings-reference#preferrednotifchannel) to `"terminal_bell"`. In Apple Terminal, also turn on **Audible bell** under **Settings > Profiles > Advanced** to hear it. The following settings entry sets the channel:

7379```json ~/.claude/settings.json theme={null}

No line in this hunk matches that.
