Unclear Which MCP server configurations get the preparation step is not stated.
What
MCP servers are outside programs that give Claude Code extra tools. Some MCP server configurations now go through a preparation step before Claude Code connects to them. The time this step takes is taken out of the server's connection timeout, which is how long Claude Code waits before giving up.
At startup these servers are handled as their own group. If the preparation step fails, that server is shown as a failed connection.
Why
For the affected servers, startup timing and the errors you see when a connection fails may be different.
