What
Auto mode lets Claude Code act without asking you to approve each step, and it depends on a safety check. When the environment variable CLAUDE_CODE_PROVIDER_MANAGED_BY_HOST is set, meaning a host program manages which model provider Claude Code uses, and auto mode is unavailable for one of these reasons, the explanation now reads "It needs a safety check that isn't available here.":
beta features are off
auto mode's own switch is off
it was not requested
it was not offered by the server
Why
People in host-managed setups get a reason that fits their situation instead of a generic message about betas or switches they cannot change.
